Introducing The Power Dynamic
Tech/nonsense
I’m turning 50 this year.
There are two important lessons I’ve gained from people older than me. The first came from a classmate when I was getting certified as an executive coach. I was turning 30 and made a comment about feeling like I was getting older, fast. He said to me — “Don’t ever complain to someone older than you about feeling like you are getting older.” The disdain was palpable. I always thought that was good advice.
Another insight I learned from someone in their 50s about being in your 50s is that there is still actually a lot of time to do things that you want to do, but you really do have to get started. Because there is not a lot of time left before there actually won’t be a lot of time left to get started.
And so, the Power Dynamic
At some point in the last few years, I’ve realized I’ve entered a new phase in my professional journey: I’m just not running into as many people who remember the early eras of my career and that’s because they hadn’t started theirs yet. Like it or not, I’ve become an elder in my community of work.
Elders in any community should share whatever wisdom they’ve earned through their years of trying with the rest of the people coming up in the community. So that’s what I’m going to start doing here.
Most of my work has been in tech
I’ve spent a lot of my life working with tech companies — some big, some small. Primarily from the inside, but sometimes from the outside. So many stories! Expect a lot of stories and what I’ve learned with these companies.
But also, nonsense
If you know me personally, you’d expect a fair amount of nonsense. There is probably a 20% nonsense tariff to sort through to get to any sort of (alleged) wisdom. Take it or leave it.
